Early on Monday mornings, volunteers gather at Good Shepherd to make sandwiches and pack bag lunches to deliver to day laborers in Berkeley and Richmond. The group makes about 80 lunches per week, with a sandwich, fruit, and snack. In 2012 alone, over 4,000 bag lunches were assembled and distributed.
The sandwich ministry began in February of 2011, and was initially funded by donations and money from the church’s discretionary fund. Retired Good Shepherd Deacon Teddy Knight organizes and leads the volunteers in the preparation, and assists with receiving donations of food for the work. Presently, food is provided at low-or-no cost from the Alameda County Food Bank, with produce supplied by Good Shepherd’s organic garden.
Volunteers wishing to help with this ministry can join us at 9:30 am on Mondays in the Parish Hall to make and distribute lunches.
